Reflections from the WIKI Lab and the article reading.

February 4th, 2008 (07:08 pm)

Upon reading the article entitled: “Hacking Human: data-archaeology and surveillance in social networks." The main thought left in my head, was that I was a stalker, and that it is so easy to become one. Through facebook I have become an addictive stalker of people who are not necessarily my friends. Facebook puts pressure people to add each other because they don’t want to be considered rude if they don’t add someone that is familiar to them. I have access to many people’s profiles, pictures, videos, and wall post with their other friends, and I don’t consider myself a close friend to the majority of them. I find myself however stalking certain people, trying to get a glimpse of what is going on in their lives, pictures to see how they look, and even updates that they post about themselves. Facebook makes it easy for me to find out when anything important has changed in anyone’s life, by posting it all together on a homepage so that I have a guide to tell me which profiles I need to visit that day. I am embarrassed of what I am doing, yet it had become so mainstream that I am able to confess about it on this blog, and continue to stalk people without even feeling to weird about it.

When practicing how to use the Wiki, I must confess that it was really easy and fun to do. I remember struggling with the Wiki in my music and creative arts class. It was really hard for me to understand what was going on, and I was having trouble doing what I wanted to do. I thought it was really cool how the Wiki allowed me to easily use Jason Nolan’s name to lead viewers to his live journal page. I also found the “Most frequent Wiki markup explained” site to really help me better understand how to edit on my Wiki. I can see myself returning to this page a lot during my project because the instructions are simply and clearly laid out for me. For some reason it was a bit difficult for me to upload a picture of myself on my page, but the process just made it that more rewarding for me when I finally saw my picture up there! I really enjoyed this process and I think the clear instructions played a large role in my enjoyment. I am looking forward to getting started the SongChild project, and am thankful for such an organized and helpful professor.

Wow Shoshi
The wiki is so exciting isn't it ... Well its great that your looking forward to do the Songchild project. I had the same experience in Danny's class "Music and Creative Arts". It was difficult in the beginning to use wiki but now I am getting into the habit with all the commands.

I have to say i don't think it is ever okay to admit your a facebook stalker... That being said i understand how easily addictive facebook becomes. It would be interesting to see how many people know that facebook now owns and has the rights to any pictures they post on their profile. Did you know if you upload an album and then delete it, it is still on facebooks database. When you delete pictures it is still stored somewhere on facebook, and by putting it on facebook you have given away the rights for facebook to pull it up at any time and use it or sell it as they please. In regards to the wiki i agree it was easy, i thought we were supposed to substitute our name for his and link our wikis to our own page? Oh well i think as long as you linked it to someone and it worked then you were good.

Wow,I am hacker myself without even realizing it. That is scary but at the same time i really think it is about intent. I go and look at peoples pictures and videos on Facebook but I don't do anything about it. I think its just entertainment and also I believe that in a way i have the right to because they have given me access to that information. Someone can block things on Facebook so that others can not see it unless you know ins and outs of the program. However thats with nay program.

My opinion of facebook is that it is a stalking tool. We get to connect with people who we may have not talked to since grade school or high school or university. We can get a glimpse at what they are doing now (is the brainy one how a multi-millionaire while the jock one is a drunk?)

It's an instant reunion tool, you don't even have to show up or dress up for the reunion!

This is such a funny and very true post. I too am guilty of the Facebook stalker ordeal. It is just too easy to find out what other people have been up to on a daily basis, and to see what they did on the weekend by looking at their pictures and wallposts. It is almost becoming addicting to check it a lot during the day.

I do think, however, that it does serve a good purpose for some people. Just recently I found many of my old skating buddies, I hadn't talked to in over ten years. It is amazing getting in contact with them, sharing pictures and stories and trying to catch up.

The one thing I like about Facebook is that you can put settings on what others can see. That is the greatest part about it all. So maybe for those friends of friends friends, you should limit your profile so they can't stalk you like you're stalking them :)
